Inclusive skills competitions
Competitions are a great way for young people to show off their work skills and growing independence. Natspec, Derwen College and North Warwickshire and Hinckley College have set up a series of new national competitions that give young people at entry level and level 1 the chance to enjoy competitions. The competitions are also open to young people who don’t attend our colleges.
Working in partnership with Natspec is part of our commitment to ensure that as many learners as possible have access to competition activity. We look forward to welcoming many more learners from the specialist and FE colleges, who have taken part in this activity, at this year's The Skills Show.
Skills competitions are well established in mainstream FE colleges and last year Natspec (The Association of National Specialist Colleges) supported six specialist colleges to run competitions for Natspec students with learning or physical disabilities. The competitions built links with local businesses like The Co-operative, who offered guidance, sponsorship and competition judges.
North Warwickshire & Hinckley College (NWHC) have hosted a competition called ‘Footsteps to the Future’ for a number of years. Aimed at foundation learners aged 16 and over - entry 1, entry 2, entry 3, and level 1 - the competition, designed to raise students’ self-esteem and self-confidence, helps them to move onto further training at the next level. The competition is open to all foundation learners and covers a range of different disciplines and subjects including: hospitality and catering, IT, motor vehicle, media and floristry.
